Neighborhood Safety

As a major research university located in the nation's capital, Georgetown University is proud of the advantages our location provides for teaching, research and learning. Although the neighborhoods surrounding the University are some of the safest in the District, students, faculty and staff should still be vigilant about their personal safety as well as the safety of their homes.

Georgetown, Burleith and Glover Park

  • SafeRide Program: This program provides free, safe transportation for students to and from campus and adjacent neighborhoods. A SafeRides Shuttle operates to and from the main gates of campus (37th and O Streets) in two continuous loops through Burleith or West Georgetown.

  • Street Safety: Although the neighborhoods surrounding the University are some of the safest in the District, students living in the area have to be vigilant about their personal safety as well as the safety of their homes.

Washington D.C. and Region

  • District of Columbia Statistics and Resources: Metropolitan District of Columbia Police Department (MPD) maintains crime statistics for the District of Columbia and a public sex offender registry. Georgetown University and surrounding neighborhoods are in MPD's 2nd District.

  • District of Columbia Department of Health: The District of Columbia Department of Health promotes and protects the health, safety and quality of life of residents, visitors and those doing business in the District of Columbia. The department's responsibilities include identifying health risks; educating the public; preventing and controlling diseases, injuries and exposure to environmental hazards; promoting effective community collaborations; and optimizing equitable access to community resources.
