In the event of an emergency as described below, information affecting the general campus community will be distributed via voice mail, email, this website, and through the Building and Floor Marshals (identified by distinctive vests and hats). Building and Floor Marshals will post information in lobby elevator landings of each building to include:
- ICC Galleria/3rd floor elevator lobby
- White-Gravenor elevator lobby
- Sellinger Lounge in Leavey Center
- Healy Hall 1st floor center door
- Pierce Reading Room in Lauinger Library
- Walsh Hall elevator lobby
- Medical Center Research Building Auditorium
The Provost and/or the Executive Vice President of the Medical Center will distribute specific instructions to Deans and Directors of Main Campus and Medical Center units via email. These instructions will outline specific roles and responsibilities for faculty and staff. Faculty and staff should know their own department's emergency communication plan and become familiar with Building and Floor Marshals.
Shelter-In-Place
This situation involves an emergency where it is important to minimize exposure to outside risks for what may be a prolonged period of time. Shelter-in-place is signaled by repetitive blasts from the Campus Alert System (steam whistle). The horn will sound in a series of intermittent 5-second blasts, for a total of 15 minutes. Furthermore, Building and Floor Marshals will alert occupants of their buildings of the need to stay inside. Broadcast e-mails and voicemails will be used to relay the same message. HOYAlert may also be used to send immediate and updated information.
- Everyone should immediately seek refuge inside a classroom, residence hall, apartment, or the closest available facility. Close all windows and doors and, where possible, shut down office heating and air-conditioning units. Stay away from windows and doors. Faculty with more sophisticated lab equipment will receive separate instructions from their department.
- If faculty and students are in class at the time a Shelter-In-Place incident is announced by the Campus Alert System, they should remain in the classroom. Faculty members are to remain with their class, close all windows, and wait for instructions from the Building or Floor Marshals or DPS.
- Building and Floor Marshals will receive information via radio from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and post information in the public areas listed above, as well as classroom corridors. They will also know where food, water, first aid, and other emergency supplies are located.
- Staff members should follow the direction of their supervisors in conjunction with instructions from Building and Floor Marshals.
- The University will provide food and water to support those individuals who are on campus in the event of an emergency requiring Shelter-In-Place procedures. However, it is a good idea for you to have certain items readily available, such as medicines, eyeglasses or other essential items that you may need in the event of an emergency.
Building Evacuation
Evacuations are signaled by the interior building fire alarm system. This situation involves an emergency that requires all occupants to immediately leave the building via the nearest exit and proceed to the designated assembly areas.
- Review the floor evacuation plans posted in all classrooms and labs.
- Review evacuation and sheltering plans with students in their class at the beginning of each semester.
- Faculty will lead students to the primary evacuation site indicated on posted evacuation procedures.
- Collect the names of all students in their class who come to the primary evacuation site and report those names to the Building Marshal. It would also be helpful for faculty members to report the names of any student who is not in class at the time of evacuation.
- Staff should follow the direction of their supervisors in conjunction with instructions from Building and Floor Marshals.
- Distribute safety information as necessary.
Gathering-In
Gathering-in involves providing information regarding a major event in which we have no indication that we are specifically at risk at Georgetown. In such a situation, the best place to go is your office where you can monitor e-mail, voicemail and news via radios, television or the Internet. Building Marshals and Floor Marshals will be in contact with the Emergency Operations Center and will provide information, including the operating status of the University, as it becomes available. We will provide information in the following common areas, where Building Marshals and Floor Marshals will be posted to provide information as it becomes available:
- ICC Galleria
- Sellinger Lounge in Leavey Center
- Medical Center Research Building Auditorium
- Pierce Reading Room in Lauinger Library
Please note that in each of the above situations, Hall Directors, Resident Advisors, Building Marshals, Floor Marshals and members of the Emergency Response Team will be wearing ERT hats and reflective vests. Seek out these people at any time in any building for information.
